What is Clear Quartz?
Clear Quartz is the transparent, colourless variety of quartz, a mineral made of silicon dioxide. It is also called rock crystal, and in India you’ll often hear it called sphatik. It scores 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is tough enough for daily jewellery. It is one of the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust, so it is both easy to find and affordable.
The name comes from the Greek word for ice. Ancient writers believed rock crystal was water frozen so deeply it could never melt.

Why it’s called the “master healer”
In crystal traditions, Clear Quartz is the stone people reach for to sharpen focus and to amplify the intention they set, or the energy of other stones placed with it. Many people also like it because it goes with everything: it has no colour of its own to match or clash.
These are traditional beliefs and personal experiences. There is no scientific evidence that Clear Quartz changes your health or energy, and it should never replace medical care. Many people simply find that holding or keeping a stone nearby helps them pause and concentrate.

How to tell real Clear Quartz from glass
Plenty of “sphatik” sold online is glass. A few checks help:
- Natural quartz usually has tiny internal wisps, veils or fractures. These are normal and don’t affect the stone.
- Perfectly flawless clarity, especially with small round bubbles, can point to glass.
- Real quartz feels cool to the touch and stays cool for longer than glass.
- Buy from sellers who list the stone clearly and let you ask questions before you order.
Three simple ways to use it
- Morning intention. Hold a piece in your hand, say one sentence about what you want from the day, and set it down where you’ll see it.
- Desk or meditation. Keep a point or tumble nearby while you work or sit. Many people use it as a cue to settle their attention.
- With other stones. Place it beside another crystal, or on a selenite charging plate, as part of a cleansing routine.
Caring for your Clear Quartz
- Plain running water is safe for the quartz itself. Avoid it for wire-wrapped trees, elastic bracelets and anything with silver findings.
- Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth.
- Many people cleanse theirs in sunlight or moonlight for a few hours.
- Store pieces apart so they don’t scratch softer stones.

Frequently asked questions
What is Clear Quartz used for?
It is used for meditation, focus and home decor, and as a “master” stone that people pair with others. These are traditional uses, not proven effects.
Is sphatik the same as Clear Quartz?
In India, “sphatik” usually means clear, colourless quartz. Some glass is sold under the same name, so check the signs above.
Can Clear Quartz go in water?
The quartz can, because it is hard and stable. Wire trees, elastic bracelets and silver jewellery should stay dry.
Raw or polished: which should I buy?
Raw stones show the natural crystal and cost less. Polished pieces, such as tumbles and pyramids, suit shelves and handling.
Can I keep it with other crystals?
Yes. It is traditionally said to amplify the stones around it.
Does Clear Quartz really work?
There is no scientific evidence that it affects health or energy. Many people use it as a calm, focused daily ritual.
Is it a good gift?
Yes. It is neutral in colour, easy to understand and suits most people.
